Originally the land of the Varian family, the area around 28 West 27th street, and Madison Square in general, has a rich history. Isaac Varian became the 63rd mayor of the city, and considered one of its most honest. The Knickerbocker Cottage at 27th and Sixth saw the foundation of the Shriners and other secret societies, later became the famous Mouquin's restaurant which inspired more secrets, art, and culinary history. Madison Square has a history all its own, with limbs of the State of Liberty and nearby grand, extravagent, and temporary arches.
