1851 - Knickerbocker Cottage
1909 engraving of the Knickerbocker Cottage as it appeared in 1851. "The old Knickerbocker Cottage, in Sixth-avenue, near Twenty-seventh-street, was sold at auction by John F. B. Smyth, in the Exchange Salesroom, yesterday... The Knickerbocker Cottage was built piecemeal in the early part of the present century. More than 150 years ago the land on which the cottage stands was owned by the Varian family, one of whom was Mayor of New-York. The cottage first became known as a public resort in 1850. It was kept as a roadhouse by Peter Connor for several years, and in 1863 Capt. William Fowler took a long lease of it. Under the latter's management it became a popular, quiet resort for merchants and sporting men. A great many different clubs and associations were organized under its roof. Capt. Fowler sold his lease to ex-Alderman Bernard Goodwin last May." (The New York Times, March 19, 1885).
