1876 - Lady Liberty's Torch in Madison Square
“They have not been able to procure a whole statue, but they have ornamented the city with a nice large piece of the intended statue’s arm” (New York Times, Feb. 26, 1877). "Ground was broken yesterday morning in Madison square, opposite the Worth monument, for the temporary erection of the arm of Bardholdt's statue of "Liberty Enlightening the World." It was exhibited for some time at the Centennial Exhibition. Measures are shortly to be taken to raise the necessary funds for the erection of the pedestal on Bedloe's Island." (New York Herald, Feb 13, 1877). Before the money was available to erect the statue on Liberty Island (formerly Bedloe's Island), the torch of Lady Liberty spent 6 years at Madison Square. To raise funds for the construction, visitors were charged 50 cents to climb the arm. This stereograph - a popular format for faux 3D effects - depicts the torch in Madison Square. It was also sold as a souvenir to help raise funds.
