"New York's "Victory Arch" at 24th Street and Fifth Avenue, conceived by Mayor John F. Hylan and built in 1918 to honor the city's war dead. The $80,000 triple arch was designed by Thomas Hastings in temporary materials and modeled after the Arch of Constantine in Rome, with relief panels commemorating important battles, war service organizations and industrial might -- like munitions makers.

Fiorello H. LaGuardia, as a candidate for President of the Board of Alderman in 1919, denounced the project as the "Altar of Extravagance."

The original intent was to rebuild the arch in permanent form. But according to "Public Sculpture and the Civic Ideal in New York City," by Michele Bogart, arguments over who was to get the commission and over the arch's symbolism stopped the proposal and the arch was later razed. Sculptors led by Alexander Stirling Calder (father of the mobile artist) felt that the design of the Victory Arch was an excessive celebration of the defeat of Germany." [NYT]
  • Matting & Framing Options

You can customize your print's presentation from a wide selection of frames and mats: modern or classic - all timeless. See the options here.

Our most popular style is Modern Black - Thin frame, coupled a White Mat with Black Core. The Modern White frames will match any style and are perfect for gifts. Looking for something with more bang? The gold and silver frames may be what you want. See examples here.

Mats are not offered with Gallery frames at the moment (but look great without them!).

  • Frame Sizes

All frames are custom cut and sized to match the dimensions of the image. Your final, framed print might not exactly match the dimensions listed in the Frame Size dropdown menu.

The maximum dimensions of each frame size are:

    • Keepsake: Up to 5" x 7"
    • Accent: Up to 9" x 12"
    • Spotlight: Up to 16" x 20"
    • Centerpiece: Up to 34" x 36"
    • Gallery: Up to 32" x 40"

Because of the original pixel size of the scans, not all prints are available in all sizes.

  • Shipping & Delivery

    Shipping is always free!

Prints will be scanned at the archives, and retouched by our artists to make them pixel-perfect. They will then be reprinted, trimmed, matted and framed to fit their custom sizes.

You should expect the final, framed print in 4-6 weeks. Because each print is custom researched, retouched, and framed, all sales are final.
